API has also introduced a new “Resource Conserving” designation that may be used in conjunction with API SN. The Resource Conserving designation replaces the previous Energy Conserving designation.
While the Energy Conserving designation focused only on fuel economy, the new Resource Conserving designation covers fuel economy, emission system and turbocharger protection, and compatibility with ethanol containing fuels (up to E85).
